The Branded Gaming Index: a reference database of brands in video games

The Branded Gaming Index (brandedgamingindex.com) is a curated, searchable database of 184 branded gaming case studies from 145 brands, 2018 to 2026: how brands enter video games, esports and play culture instead of advertising around them. Each entry documents the brand, the campaign, the game or platform, the year, the region and a short analysis, with links to sources. It is curated by Jonathan Colmenares Mendez (Founder & Principal, Office of Applied Imagination) and published by The New Playgrounds.

What is branded gaming?

Branded gaming is when a brand takes part in video games, esports or gaming culture directly, rather than buying ads around them. The index sorts every case study into one of seven types:

Why are brands investing in gaming?

  • 96% of Gen Z engage with games, ahead of Instagram (67%), TikTok (60%) and Facebook (33%). Source: GroupM, GEEIQ, Newzoo, 2024.
  • Under 5% of global media investment goes to gaming, despite that attention. Source: Dentsu & GWI, State of Gaming 2024.

Done well, gaming is a storytelling vehicle for cultural relevance and engaged audiences. The index collects the work that shows how.
